The Midwest Ethnic Convention for Comics and Arts – MECCA, aka MECCACon, a large independent comic book and artist convention, took place on Sept. 17 at the Detroit Public Library and Midwest BSFA represented to the fullest!

It was our second year attending the event, where Aiesha ran the Midwest BSFA table, spreading the word about our organization! She also hosted a steampunk character building workshop.

“The reason MECCA was established was to instill knowledge primarily in the younger art culture,” said Maia “Crown” Williams, the event’s organizer. “It is my mission to make sure that children know that all ‘heroes’ do not look the same. While comic books are the main focus, we want to make sure that ALL forms of art are highlighted. At the end of the day, art is and always will be creative expression.”

And creative expression was of the highest order, with heavy hitters like Marcus “The Visual” Willams (Tuskegee Heirs), N Steven Harris (Watson and Holmes) and Regine Sawyer (Eating Vampires, Ice Witch) in attendance, plying their comic wares in the vendor hall. The convention also highlighted several short films and featured an array of panels and sessions, from Women in Comics to Afrofuturism.

The vibe at MECCACon is wonderful and we can’t wait to do it again next year!
